Hi Alexis. You can start your business any way you want! Don't let anyone tell you it can't be done. I've found that business plans help you to get clear in your own head what you want to do and what your goals are. Sometimes they even help you focus and see if it's really do-able. I'm not sure where to direct you to find a good source of finished wholesale jewelry as I work more with artists who make their own components or pieces. Displays are as varied as the artists who create them and there are many resources out there for how to do it. I'd say to look around at shows that you'd like to show in and see what others are doing. Keep it simple so it doesn't take precedence over your pieces and think about portability because you're going to have to set it up and put it away when you're done. It also all depends on where you are selling and how big of a space you have. Bruce Baker has some great tapes on booth display that you can google.

Hi Alexis.

If you buy the jewelry wholesale you should be able to mark it up 100%. A $50 wholesale price should yield at least $100. Retail stores mark their prices up two times the wholesale price or more.

However, you have to take into consideration your market. Can they afford that? Will they pay it? If not, can you survive with a lower mark up? Is it worth it?

Hi Shirley. It should be easy to figure out how much the cost for wire is. Based on the price of the wire you buy, figure out how much a length of it costs and then determine how much your piece uses. That will give you the material cost for the wire. Then, take into consideration the other factors listed above and you should be able to determine your price.

This is an excellent and detailed article. One thing I would add is to consider economics in your prices & even into your product creation. Consider the Supply/Demand situation's of your product and work to increase the demand. Ultimatly your time is a limited resource and watch to see which of your items give you the best return.

What a thorough and detailed article Lori! Thank you so much for posting this. I think this info is very helpful, especially since I think most artists undervalue their work.
